Yes, when it is confined to the gallbladder wall or nearby liver and is removed completely with clear margins and lymph nodes. Early-stage disease has good long-term survival; outcomes fall sharply if the operation is incomplete or delayed.
My gallbladder was removed for stones and the biopsy shows cancer. What now?
This is called incidental gallbladder cancer. For tumours beyond the innermost layer (T1b and above), a second operation to remove the adjacent liver segments and lymph nodes is recommended, ideally within 4–8 weeks. Should a gallbladder polyp be removed?
